How to send lucky money via Wechat? The Chinese New Year (CNY) of the Monkey will start on February 8th 2016. Last year, on the lunar New Year’s eve (18th February 2015), one billion virtual red envelopes were sent. The amount of red envelopes or hongbao exchanged on Wechat was much higher than on other mobile payment platforms.
Besides sending out red envelopes using Wechat, we recommend you to visit Beijing Temple fairs and other cultural events hold during the New Year. Check below for details.
How to use red envelop or hongbao feature on Wechat?
- Prerequisites:
- To have a RMB balance in your Wechat Wallet.
- To open a Wallet in your Wechat account (check our tutorial by following this link)
- To link the card to send Red Packet
- How to withdraw a Red Packet after receiving it?
- Log out via 「Me」—>「Settings」—>「Log Out」;
- Log in to WeChat again and check received Red Packet via 「Wallet」 >「Balance」.
- Assuming you have already linked a Mainland China card to your Wechat account, use withdrawal function.
- Limit for payments made using your balance / for those who didn’t link a bank card
- for any transaction and it applies also to red envelop: 200 RMB per day and 500 RMB per month.
- Limit for payments made using your balance / for those who have linked a bank card:
- Payment limit: 5000 RMB / transaction and 15000 RMB / day.
- Up to 100 Red Packets can be sent with an amounts up to 200 RMB.

What to do during CNY in Beijing?
Chinese people will traditionally celebrate the new lunar year by eating together, visiting the uncles, giving red envelopes, displaying decoration in their houses and entrance door, visiting Temple fairs (Miao Hui庙会)… Nowadays, Chinese people will be watching CCTV Gala, sending instant message greetings and sending hongbao on Wechat.
