The organizers of the APEC Summit in Beijing have taken the engagement to ensure the quality of the air will be good during the Summit. If you visit the Beijing Section of the APEC 2014 website, and you are living in Beijing, you may think that the authorities don’t want to be accused of false advertising… as they included only pictures with bright blue sky on the website.

Here are some the pictures displayed on the Beijing section of the APEC 2014 website.

Authorities claim that the pollutants emissions in Beijing and neighboring areas of Tianjin and Hebei will be reduced by 1/3 thanks to a series of measures taken to fight against air pollution:

1) Long term measures: Since end of June, Beijing has closed some of its plants and more than 300 polluting factories, forbidden old vehicles and introduced modern technologies to reduce emissions in other factories.

2) Temporary suspension of polluting activities. Government has asked key polluting enterprises to reduce their production. Work on some construction projects will also be suspended for the same period.

3) Odd-even license plate system: to ease transportation on roads. The traffic control system will allow cars to drive on alternating days based on odd or even license plate numbers from Nov. 3 to 12, aiming at decreasing the traffic by 35 percent.

4) Increase of the number of public buses: to ensure the transportation capacity (400 buses will be added).

5) Six days holiday for workers from government: Beijing Municipal Government has granted workers from government departments, institutions, and organizations in the city of a 6 days holiday…. but they will have to work on Sunday 2nd and Saturday 15th November to compensate. This doesn’t apply to private-owned companies. Government expects to ease transportation on the roads and decrease environmental pollution.

6) And luckily the weather conditions are expected to be favorable during those days in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
