Beijing counts number of remarkable green buildings, do you know all of them? Green building does not always mean high-tech and expensive solutions… and the list features also an example of building renovated at low cost to save energy and water.
And there is more to come, as in January 2015, we could count in China no less than 2538 projects with the country’s Green Building Evaluation Standard certification.
The list is not exhaustive, we are only sharing the most remarkable green buildings of Beijing!
Agenda 21- China’s First Green Office Building
- Date of completion: 2005

- Usage: Office building
- Key facts:
- Gold rated High LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
- Surface: 13,000 m2
- Height: 34.2 m (8 story about ground level)
- Built at no additional costs
- 74% overall energy reduction compared with other typical office buildings (thanks to an energy-efficient cooling system to a roof garden, solar PV panels and a solar hot water system),

Sino-Italian Ecological and Energy-Efficient Building (SIEEB) – Solar Energy-Efficient Building
- Date of completion: 2006
- Architect:Mario Cucinella Architects
- Usage: University
- Key facts:
- Surface: 20,000 m2
- Height: 10 stories above ground and two below
- Over 1000 square meters of photovoltaic panels
- Walls made from a double-pane glass (isolation and maximisation of the light entering the building)
- 58 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional buildings

BEEC – Beijing Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Center
- Date of completion: build in 1986, retrofitted in 2011 (existing building renovated)

- Key facts:
- First retrofitted existing building in China to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
- energy savings of 75 percent
- water savings of 60 percent compared with regular office buildings of its size in China

- Usage: Residential compound (750 apartments, public green space, commercial area, hotel, cinema, kindergarten, Montessori school, underground parking)
- Key facts:
- Surface: 220,000 square meters
- Height: 68 meters (21 stories)
- Heat pump system which covers 70% of the complex’s yearly heating and cooling load.
