At the west of Sanyuanqiao and Liufang, a large urban area undergoing transition. These districts have been working-class and popular neighbourhoods until recently but are now turning into residential areas for the emerging Chinese middle class. This northern area has a strong appeal because of its very central location in Beijing and rather affordable rents.
Around the Temple of Earth "Ditan" , north of Andingmen and Yonghegong Lama Temple, lies a large urban residential area. This is a pleasant place to live, not too far away from the Beijing historical center: the Houhai Lake and Gulou Tower with their traditional Beijing alleys "Hutongs" where you will have many opportunities to have walks and do shopping. Overall, to live in a serviced apartment in these neighborhoods will give you the feeling that you are indeed living in Beijing, really mixed with the locals and outside of the districts with highest concentration of expatriates. The rents in these areas are still affordable, but with the Beijing development and the central situation of these neighborhoods, this might change very quickly.

The big drawback of living in this area is that there is no real center of interest for foreigners, you'll have to move towards other districts in Beijing in order to do shopping or have fun.

This is not a district that features a lot of international schools, in comparison with Shunyi and Beijing Lido. However, there is some schools for expatriate kids close to your serviced apartment in Beijing.
North of third ring road, two international schools have established branches: Harrow International School Beijing and the BISS International School, both of them located south of subway station Bei Tu Cheng. Besides, the French High school has a branch located in the Heping neighbourhood (Hepingxiqiao subway station).

Another large district undergoing a large restructuration. This district was renovated for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, its great interest is the presence of ultra-modern sport facilities together with a residential area with reasonable rents. However, this area is rather far away from other Beijing center of interest and even if it is crammed up with restaurants and cafes, most of the time you'll have to leave the area to visit more lively areas of Beijing.
