Money

Yuan MoneyThe most widely used and accepted method of payment among residents is cash. International credit cards are accepted only in large retailers and restaurants and high-end hotels. Many ATMs throughout the city accept foreign debit and credit cards including Cirrus, Plus, Amex, Visa, Visa Interlink, and MasterCard. Only the Chinese Yuan (CNY), also called “renminbi” (RMB) or “kuai”, is accepted in Beijing.

Banks
Though banking hours and days vary from bank to bank, most Chinese banks are open from 9am to 4pm or 5pm with branches open Saturdays and Sunday. Major domestic banks include Bank of China (www.boc.cn), China Merchants Bank (www.cmbchina.com), and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) (www.icbc.com.cn). Foreigners can open either CNY or USD accounts at most branches.

Exchange
The government standardizes the exchange rate so there is no need to find the best rate. With your passport, you can exchange money in most hotels, major branches of large domestic banks, and at exchange counters in the airport. Hotels generally charge a higher commission than banks.
