475 B.C.E. Warring States Period. The city of Ji becomes the capital of Yan state
206 B.C.E Han Dynasty
618 - 907 Tang Dynasty
1115 - 1234 Jin Dynasty
1271 Kublai (grandson of Genghis Khan) establishes the Yuan Dynasty
1417 - 1420 The palaces and gardens of the Forbidden City are built. Beijing (Northern Capital) becomes the new capital.
1644 Manchus found the Qing Dynasty. Construction on Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) begins.
1839 - 1862 Opium Wars. China loses and cedes Hong Kong to Britain, opining up treaty ports to foreign powers.
1899 - 1901 The Boxer Rebellion
1911 Collapse of the Qing Dynasty and the end of Imperial China.
1928 The Kuomingtang Nationalists change Beijing to Peking and make Nanjing the capital of China
1937 Japanese forces take Peking during the second Sino-Japanese War. It reverts to Beijing.
1949 Communist forces enter Beijing. Mao Zedong annouces the creation of People's Republic of China
1965 Beijing's Ming city walls are torn down to make room for the Second Ring Road.
1997 Hong Kong becomes a Special Administration Region of China (SAR) after the handover from the United Kingdom.
1999 Macau joins Hong Kong as a SAR after the handover from Portugal.
2001 Beijing is named host for the 2008 Olympic Games
2008 Beijing hosts the 2008 Olympic Games. The city's futuristic Terminal 3 opens.
